Garden measuring and soil buying guides
Practical examples to calculate quantities and plan purchases using your own measurements.
Start with your project
How much soil does a raised bed need?
A useful soil estimate starts with the inside dimensions, the depth you plan to fill and the volume printed on the bag. Keep those measurements separate from the outside size of the frame.
PRACTICAL GUIDEHow to measure the volume of a plant pot
Most round pots taper toward the bottom. Treating one as a cylinder using only its top diameter can overestimate the amount of potting mix you need.
PRACTICAL GUIDEHow many bags of soil do you need?
Compare the required volume and bag size in the same unit, then round up to whole bags. A weight printed on a package cannot be used as a volume without product-specific density.
PRACTICAL GUIDESoil volume conversions: cubic feet, yards and liters
Bagged soil and bulk soil are often priced in different volume units. Convert them before comparing quotes or ordering a delivery.
